About us

OÜ Keelevara was founded in April 2004 by the Institute of the Estonian Language, TEA publishing house, IT visionary Linnar Viik, computational linguist Indrek Hein and IT specialist Jaak Vilo in order to contribute to the development of language and language skills in Estonia. To achieve this goal, they created Keelevara, a complete language translation environment based on today's needs, which offers easy and convenient access to various professional dictionaries and lexicons via the Internet.
Since 2018, Keelevara has a new owner EMOTIVE OÜ who deals with the development and management of the Keelevara.ee portal.

Why was Keelevara created?

As specialists, creators and active users of dictionaries ourselves, we realized that in today's Estonia:

there are no electronic support systems supporting the unity, quality and development of the written language;

there are no interaction systems between languages, so the language used in international communication is not professional;

dictionaries available in the online environment are random and therefore have a limited selection of words. Dictionaries and lexicons with a common search engine are completely absent.

How to use Keelevara?

To create an account, send an email to info@keelevara.ee with your desired list of dictionaries you want to access. You can find list of our dictionaries on Dictionaries page.
To grant IP access we need your IP or IP address range.
